Lesson 2
Week 2 • December
Lesson Text • Acts 8:9-24
The Spirit Of Witchcraft

17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying Give me this power also so that anyone lay hands on may receive the Holy Spirit. 20 But Peter told him, May your silver be destroyed with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this matter, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, your heart’s intent may be forgiven. 23 For I see you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by wickedness. 24 Pray to the Lord for me, Simon replied, so that nothing you have said may happen to me.

The Spirit Of Witchcraft

LESSON AIM:

That we will be able to recognize the spirit of witchcraft and understand it is not just witches, warlocks, and wizards casting spells. It is also the manipulation of the mind that can sometimes be found right in our government institutions and churches.

MEMORY VERSE: “But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:” Acts 8:9, KJV

“Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great.” Acts 8:9, NIV

Lesson 2
Week 2 • December
Lesson Text • Acts 8:9-24
The Spirit Of Witchcraft

We often associate witchcraft with sorcery and casting spells. Most people think witchcraft is associated with witches and goblins around Halloween. These meanings are only recent in history for it has long been understood that witchcraft is manipulation of one’s mind. In fact, it was thought that witchcraft was the cause of many mental breakdowns, or the reason people went mad. The spirit of witchcraft can often be present in cults and even some government institutions, assemblies or churches. Another name for it is “mind-control.” When a person performs witchcraft, that means he/she has the power to influence and control a person so that they strongly believe lies and no longer have free-will but feel obligated to do whatever the person is telling them. This can be accomplished using guilt, merit, self-pity, or referencing oneself as being a higher power.

Lesson 2
Week 2 • December
Lesson Text • Acts 8:9-24
The Spirit Of Witchcraft

The word “bewitched” means to gain power over by

charm, entrancement, or captivity. Wasn’t it interesting how “charming” the intro for the television show “Bewitched” was?   In the minds eye, that “charming” intro of the television show “Bewitched” painted a deviant, inherently evil and sinful action as a benign, humorous, pleasant and main stream. Wasn’t it interesting how the main character of that show was represented as a beautiful, benevolent, lovingly faithful housewife witch?  Contrast the images of witches and witchcraft as they were portrayed in the movie “The wizard of Oz,” and the television show “Bewitched,” to that described of witchcraft in Galatians 5:16-21: “[†]For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other,  to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18[†]But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19[†]Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20[†]idolatry, witchcraft, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21[†]envy, [4] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that  those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”  ESV Study Bible.

The Bible speaks of a man by the name of Simon. Evidently, Simon was very charming, charismatic, and probably good looking too. Somewhere in his life, he realized that these attributes could be used to his gain. Consequently, he “bewitched” the people, making himself a “great one.” The people loved his eloquent speaking and his good looks. They would do anything he told them to do because he had them captivated. His influence was so significant that the Bible says the entire city gave heed to him. He even tried to buy the power of the Holy Ghost from Peter and John when they went to Samaria, not because he believed, but because he wanted to continue to use whatever power to bewitch the people. Peter rebuked and exposed him: Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.  To think that one could pay God for supernatural power, to be used to glorify one’s self before people is absurd.  Simon’s theology was bad.   (Acts 8:21). If we, especially clergy, are not careful, the devil can convince us that we can have the people “eating out of our hands” because of what we feel are our strong points. It is dangerous when a man shows the people himself and not Christ. The greater danger is when the people look to the man in place of/or as Christ. The strength of every cult is that the people see the man, and in their minds have replaced Christ with him.

Surely, then candidate Trump, was jesting about being able to shoot someone in broad daylight, without losing any support from his base-right?  Let’s examine the overwhelming evidence of criminal acts and abuse of power that President  Trump has brazenly committed-without losing the support of his base.

After The Mueller Report demonstrated incontestable evidence that President Trump committed 11 separate acts of Obstruction of Justice, After President Trump revealed classified intelligence information to Russian Ambassador Lavrov, President Trump was neither tried for his criminal conduct or impeachment.  So without even blinking an eye, what did President Trump do next?  President Trump abused his oath of office, by bribing a foreign power to investigate a domestic political rival.  Again, the evidence of President Trump’s abuse of power was overwhelming.

So how did President Trump’s base supporters respond to the overwhelming evidence of his abuse of power?  The same way they did prior to the 2016 presidential election, and at the conclusion of The Mueller Report, when clear unambiguous evidence of Trump’s persistent unethical, immoral behavior came to light.

These people are examples of what it looks to be under the “spell,” or “enchantment” of a civic leader.  In our next set of slides, notice the similarities in the leadership styles of a civic leader bewitching his supporters and how cult leaders memorize their followers.  Notice, the similarities between President Trump’s base supporters and cult followers.

GOOD THEOLOGY ALWAYS POINTS MAN TO THE TRUTH

OF THE FREEDOM FOUND IN  JESUS CHRIST

JOHN 3:28-34

28[†]You yourselves bear me witness, that I said,  I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him. 29[†]The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears the groom, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30[†] He must increase, but I must decrease. [10]He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32[†]He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33[†]Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34[†]For he whom God has sent utters the words of God… ESV STUDY BIBLE.

Lesson 2
Week 2 • December
Lesson Text • Acts 8:9-24
The Spirit Of Witchcraft

There was a woman in a church who called herself Prophetess Jane. She had a group of people, mostly young people, who looked up to her. “You are all my children,” she often said to them. Many nights after service this group of people would leave the church and go straight to Prophetess Jane’s house. She would talk to them practically all night sometimes praying and singing. Somewhere along the way, she got angry with the pastor. She knew that she had allies in her “children.” The next time they went by her house she immediately began to talk negatively about the pastor and other members of the church, saying things like beware of them. Prophetess Jane’s children now began to go to church together and sit with her, not moving unless she moved, not saying amen unless she said it. Even if they wanted to say or do something, they looked at her first. If Prophetess Jane got up and walked out, her children did too. Some nights she told them about a dream that she had where tornados had destroyed the church and people had died.  A girl named Kellie began to become afraid. She felt that what was happening in the group was not right and wanted to get away from them, but was fearful of what might happen to her because Prophetess Jane had made them all feel that she was indeed a woman of God and if anybody denied it, God would kill them.”
